American Roll-On Roll-Off Carrier (ARC) is proud to celebrate the International Day for Women in Maritime. This annual event, held on May 18, recognizes and celebrates the invaluable contributions of women to ARC and the maritime industry.

This year’s theme of “Empowering Women, Strengthening the Maritime Industry” highlights the critical role that women play in fostering innovation, resilience, and sustainability in the maritime industry. Women are making significant strides in various maritime professions, including engineering, logistics, and leadership, driving the industry towards a more inclusive and diverse future.

As one example of empowering women at sea and on shore, ARC chooses to highlight Emily Gramer, the Chief Mate on M/V ARC Independence, who is a great leader and an example to other junior officers. As Chief Mate, she is responsible for the deck department, including all topside maintenance and all cargo related operations, in addition to standing navigational watches. Chief Mate Gramer first sailed with ARC as a cadet prior to her graduation from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 2018. She has since served in a variety of ascending officer positions on three vessels in the ARC fleet. ARC is proud to also note Gramer recently earned her Master’s license, as well as serves as an officer in the Navy Reserve.

ARC CEO Eric Ebeling added, “Women like Emily bring unique perspectives and skills that are essential for innovation and sustainability in the maritime world. Today, we honor their achievements and look forward to a future where women are to be expected in every maritime position, whether at sea or on shore.”
