American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier (ARC) is pleased announce that it is a charter member of the Trident Alliance, an environmental effort by shipping lines aimed at sulfur regulation compliance in advance of the January 1, 2015 air emissions deadline.
The Trident Alliance (www.tridentalliance.org) is a coalition of ship owners and operators who share a common interest in robust enforcement of maritime sulfur regulation and are willing to collaborate to help bring it about. The alliance will partner with other stakeholder groups, who share an interest in robust enforcement, to work on specific initiatives that support this objective.

Over the past years, significant steps have been taken to implement regulations to limit sulfur emissions from shipping. While necessary, these regulations pose a significant cost and compliance challenge to the shipping industry. If the regulations are robustly implemented then compliance is the norm and competition is not distorted. However, when enforcement is weak, a temptation is created to cut corners on compliance. The result is that regulations will not have the intended effect of protecting the environment and human health. Also, responsible shipping companies are put at a disadvantage relative to those who are intentionally non‐compliant.

ARC vessels operate in a five-ship Atlantic liner service, often within the Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) of the United States and Europe. Due to ARC’s trade routes, compliance with the new sulfur regulations is a pressing concern. With a ten-day frequency, over 2.5 million square feet of commercial capacity, and nearly one million square feet of militarily useful high and heavy space, ARC’s U.S.-flag Atlantic service includes base port calls in Baltimore, MD, Charleston, SC, Brunswick, GA, and Galveston, TX in the United States and Antwerp, Belgium, Bremerhaven, Germany, and Southampton, UK; all ports are within ECA zones.

ARC is the largest U.S.-flag ro-ro carrier, and the third largest U.S.-flag carrier operating in international trade. Founded in 1990, the company provides American-owned, managed, and crewed ro-ro shipping services committed to the requirements of the Department of Defense, other U.S. government departments and commercial customers. ARC headquarters are in New Jersey, with principal offices in Frankfurt, Germany and Washington, DC.
